Daphne Willis’ Inspiration for “Somebody’s Someone”

Daphne Willis, Sony/ATV Music Publishing recording artist and mental health advocate, will perform at Dave’s House Party on Saturday, October 12, 2019. We connected with her because of her song “Somebody’s Someone.”

“Daphne is an inspirational storyteller and musician,” said Lori Trainer, Dave’s House board member and event chair. “Her song Somebody’s Someone, which is about homelessness and mental illness, resonated with us. Its message of how people can truly help other people in times of trouble filled us with empathy,” she said.

“Dave’s House is doing great things for homeless men and women with serious mental illness,” said Willis. “I learned about their programs and am so glad my tour schedule accommodated playing the 2019 Dave’s House Party. It’s going to be an incredible night of music and stories of how people can overcome obstacles in life with the help and support of others,” she said.

Willis wrote Somebody’s Someone with a friend to remind people who have mental health issues that they are not alone. “I’ve dealt with depression and insomnia; I know firsthand how isolating mental health issues can leave a person feeling,” she said. “I wanted to share a little of my personal journey, and to shine an uplifting light of hope on the debilitating darkness occupied by the homeless and mentally ill. It’s as much a song about reaching out to someone who’s in trouble as it is a song about you yourself not feeling alone and reaching out to others,” said Willis.

The song is also about homelessness, and its impact on people’s self-esteem and ability to overcome life’s obstacles. “I see homeless people everywhere, and it’s a hard situation,” she said. “I think a lot of people jump to conclusions and make assumptions about homeless people in general, and I kind of wanted to paint it in a broader stroke. When you think of them as your brother or sister or someone in your family, all of a sudden you have this empathy and compassion. It’s really important that we all have empathy for others,” said Willis.

Dave’s House Party is our annual party with a cause, celebrating our programs that help our residents with serious mental illness overcome life’s challenges and live in wellness through permanent supportive housing. The evening will also include great food, open bar, dueling pianos, games and silent/live auctions.

You can support our programs by attending the Party. You can also show your support as a Dave’s House Party Sponsor or by donating a silent auction item.

We look forward to seeing you on October 12 at Howl at the Moon for an incredibly fun evening with our family of supporters!
